Osogbo—Assassinated former Minister of Justice and Attorney
General of the Federation, Late Chief James Bola Ige, was yesterday
honoured in his home state, as the visitor to the Osun State University
and Governor of Osun State, Mr Rauf Aregbesola named the state-
owned university after him.
This was part of a sweeping renaming of all the tertiary institutions in
the state which was announced at the convocation ceremony of the
Also, business mogul and oil magnate, Mrs Folorunso Alakija was
installed as the new Chancellor of Osun State University, Osogbo,
making her the first woman chancellor of government-owned
university in Nigeria.
Accompanied by her husband, Mr Modupe Alakija, the new Chancellor
had earlier been conferred with Doctorate of Business Administration,
DBA, Honoris Causa by the university.
The latest honorary doctorate degree bestowed on her makes it her
fifth Honorary Doctorate Degree Award, making it “another glass
ceiling broken by womanhood.”
In her speech at the occasion, Mrs Alakija urged parents to change
their perspectives on girl-child education in Nigeria, saying that
women are now breaking all barriers in human endeavours.
She said that gone were the days when women were restricted to the
kitchen and made to suffer in silence, stressing that today women are
treading in previously held uncharted territories, where only men were
She recalled that women like Professor Alele Williams, Chioma Ajuwa,
Mrs Florence Seriki, Rear Admiral Mrs Toun Okewale-Sonaiya and
several others have made their marks on the sand of time, doing what
men could not do.
She said: “I feel extremely humbled, proud and excited to be receiving
this conferment as Chancellor. I also appreciate the Honorary
Doctorate Degree in Business Administration (DBA) (Honoris Causa),
which came in as a surprise.
