With the transfer window heading into the final stretch, Arsenal have been linked with a move for Real Madrid’s Isco.
According to reports, the playmaker has been ‘offered’ to Arsenal for £25million and it’s a deal the Gunners are allegedly pondering.
So how true is it likely to be?
Speaking at his pre-Burnley press conference on Friday, Arsene Wenger played down the prospect of Arsenal signing anyone else this transfer window.
‘No, not at the moment,’ Wenger said when asked if he would be adding any more players. ‘We have 23 players in training – and plus two is 25 – so unless people go out we are not on the verge of bringing anybody in.’
Mathieu Debuchy seems likely to be the only player to leave before the window shuts and it is a bit of a stretch to think that they will replace him with Isco.
Isco, who has been with the Spanish giants since his €30million move from Malaga in 2013, is under contract with Real Madrid until 2018
Just one goal and four assists in 16 league games this season has seen him come under pressure, but his market value is still holding strong and it would take a significant offer from Arsenal for Madrid to even consider selling him.
The player, according to his agent, is said to be unhappy with life at the club, but the links with Arsenal seem to be tenuous at best, unfortunately.
It is far more likely Real Madrid would wait unto the summer before moving him on.
It’s also hard to see where Wenger fits Isco into his squad unless he has doubts over Jack Wilshere’s long-term fitness which is not at all an unreasonable thing to have at this point in the young Englishman’s career.
Will Arsenal move for Isco? It’s hard to know for sure, but whatever happens, it is more likely a question for the summer more than right now.
